Encyclia ionosma #6348
(‘Oreana Heaven’ x ‘Fragrant Tea’) (approximately 25 seedlings per flask). Species: Encyclia ionosma is endemic to Southeast Brazil in the Atlantic Rainforest in the states of Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and possibly in Minas Gerais. It is a fragrant species that is described as violet-scented. It is a medium sized plant that blooms in late spring and summer on an erect, 12" tall inflorescence with up to 12 flowers. The flower size is 1.25”. According to taxonomic authorities this is a valid species and Encyclia euosma is considered synonym. Culture: I have no personal experience growing this species, but can pass on the comments from a friend, Kyryll Savchenko. "I’ve been growing this species for three years and does really well for me with intermediate winters (nights are around 56 F, days are up to 75F) and warm-intermediate summers (60-65 nights and 75-90F days). It is mounted on a cedar plank with a little bit of moss and is watered year-round with RO water and dilute fertilizer at around 200 ppm. It is fully dry or almost dry before it is watered again, though. It receives pretty bright light but not Vanda bright, more like Cattleya bright. It is also a very compact plant with fragrant flowers, much smaller than most other Encyclia plants. I like it very much." Parents: I do not have pictures of the parents, so show here some images that show the species well. My thanks to Cássio van den Berg and Dave Hunt for permission to use their images. |
